Air Jordan 1 Royal 2026: Release Date, Price and the Nine-Year Wait

The Air Jordan 1 Royal 2026 lands October 10 for $185 in full leather — but Jordan Brand quietly skipped the '85 cut, and the timing says more about the AJ1's future than the shoe itself.

Nine Years, One Colourway, Zero Leather

The last time you could buy a leather Royal High in a store, the iPhone 7 was current and nobody had heard of a lockdown.

April 2017. $160 retail. Style code 555088-007. That pair has been the reference point ever since, and the fact that it still trades above retail nine years later tells you the colourway never actually cooled off — Jordan Brand just stopped feeding it.

There was a Royal in between, technically. The 2023 “Royal Reimagined” swapped the leather for suede, arrived in family sizing at $180, and then did something unusual for an OG Jordan 1 colourway: it stayed in stock. For days. Resellers barely bothered. Some outlets called it the year’s most underrated Jordan. Most people called it “the suede ones” and moved on.

So no, the Reimagined doesn’t count as the Royal coming back. That’s like saying you’ve seen the Beatles because you watched a tribute act at a wedding.

What You’re Actually Getting

Official retailer imagery surfaced in July, and the build is exactly what the purists asked for — right up until the part where it isn’t.

The good news: it’s full leather, top to bottom. Black leather across the toe and side panels, royal blue on the toebox, heel and Swooshes, white midsole, black outsole. Black mesh tongue, black laces, Wings logo on the collar. The 1985 blocking, untouched.

The catch: it’s the standard Retro High OG shape, not the Air Jordan 1 ’85 build.

That’s a bigger deal than it sounds. For the last couple of years, Jordan Brand’s own signalling — including a display of ’85 samples inside the Michael Jordan Building at its Beaverton headquarters — suggested every original colourway would eventually return on the taller, boxier, more historically accurate 1985 pattern. The Royal was widely expected to be one of them. It isn’t. The ’85 programme appears to be parked for now.

Whether that’s a downgrade depends entirely on your feet. The ’85 is the connoisseur’s cut. The standard High OG is the one you can actually wear to work without your ankles filing a complaint.

The Royal’s Receipts: A Release History

Part of the reason this pair carries weight is that Jordan Brand has been unusually stingy with it. Six meaningful releases in forty-one years is restraint by AJ1 standards.

Year Version Notes
1985 Original One of the first AJ1 colourways to reach the public
2001 Retro Mid The first comeback — and a mid-top, which aged badly
2013 Retro High OG All-Star Weekend release
2015 Retro Low OG Colourway moves to the low-top
2017 Retro High OG $160, full leather, the modern benchmark
2023 “Royal Reimagined” Suede upper, mixed reception, sat on shelves
2025 Low ’85 Limited run on the ’85 low pattern
2026 Retro High OG October 10, $185, IQ5495-005

The colourway itself comes from Peter Moore’s original 1985 design language — the same brief that produced the Bred and the Chicago, minus the Bulls team palette. It’s most associated with the early promo photography of Michael Jordan in a flight suit, images that have been reposted so many times they’ve basically become sneaker wallpaper.

Worth flagging: several outlets describe the Royal as MJ’s own favourite AJ1 and the first colourway to hit shelves. Those claims circulate widely and aren’t formally documented by Jordan Brand, so treat them as sneaker folklore rather than fact.

Why the Timing Is the Most Interesting Part of the Air Jordan 1 Royal 2026

Here’s where it gets genuinely strange.

Reports circulating across the industry since June say Jordan Brand plans to significantly reduce Air Jordan 1 High output beginning Spring 2027. The reasoning is the obvious one: the silhouette got over-served, resale premiums collapsed, and pairs that once vanished in seconds started sitting at full price. The same medicine is already being applied to the Dunk and the Air Force 1.

The AJ1 High has been noticeably quiet through 2026 as it is. So dropping a heritage colourway that people have waited nine years for, a few months before the tap gets turned down, reads one of two ways.

Read one: this is the send-off. A genuine OG retro used as the last big AJ1 moment before the model goes on a diet.

Read two: it’s another reissue in a decade full of reissues, and the risk of wearing out a classic is exactly what got the AJ1 into this mess. Footwear News made this point directly when the date was confirmed — the Royal returning is welcome, but “again” is doing a lot of work in that sentence.

Both readings can be true. That’s kind of the problem.

Will It Sell Out? The Resale Maths

Let’s use actual numbers instead of vibes.

The 2017 Royal has held up well. On StockX it has averaged around $235 with a 52-week range of roughly $155–$341, with most sizes clustering between $201 and $252 — call it a 59% premium over its original $160 retail. Nine years on, that’s a healthy pulse.

The 2023 Reimagined is the counterweight. It launched at $180 and traded at or near retail almost immediately, with an early premium in the mid-teens that didn’t hold. Suede was blamed. Fatigue was probably the real culprit.

So the 2026 pair sits between two data points: a leather Royal that appreciated, and a suede Royal that didn’t. It has the leather. It has a nine-year gap. It does not have the ’85 build, and it’s landing at $185 in a market where the AJ1 High no longer sells itself.

Our call: expect it to sell through over days rather than seconds, with a modest resale premium in the first month that softens by December. If Jordan Brand keeps the numbers genuinely tight, that flips — but tight numbers haven’t been the house style lately.

Buying the Royal in India

This is the part most global sites skip, so here’s the honest version.

India doesn’t get SNKRS drops the way the US does, which means October 10 is not automatically your date. Expect the pair to land through Nike India and the boutique network — Superkicks, VegNonVeg, Limited Edt, Mainstreet Marketplace and similar — with timing that can trail the US launch by anywhere from a day to a few weeks.

On price: recent Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG general releases have carried an Indian MRP in the region of ₹16,995. Nothing is confirmed for IQ5495-005 yet, so treat that as a ballpark, not a quote.

If you’re importing instead:

  • Budget for customs duty on footwear, which is substantial and routinely catches people out
  • Factor GOAT/StockX platform fees and international shipping on top
  • A $185 pair can realistically land past ₹25,000 by the time it reaches your door
  • Buy from a stockist with a returns policy if you’re unsure on size — international returns are a nightmare

Domestic retail is almost always the better play on a general release like this. Save the import route for the pairs India genuinely doesn’t get.

Cop or Skip

Cop if you:

  • Don’t already own a leather Royal and have wanted one since 2017
  • Want an OG colourway that isn’t red — the Royal is the most wearable of the original three
  • Believe the supply cutback reports and want a heritage pair before the calendar thins out
  • Prefer the standard High OG’s on-foot feel over the ’85’s taller collar

Skip if you:

  • Were holding out specifically for the ’85 cut — wait, it’ll come eventually
  • Already have the 2017 pair in wearable condition
  • Are buying purely to flip, because the numbers don’t support a quick margin
  • Have a Reimagined pair you barely wear and are about to make the same mistake in leather

Sizing and On-Foot Notes

The Retro High OG runs true to size for most people, with a narrow toe box that catches out wide feet. Half a size up is the standard advice if you’re wide, but be aware the AJ1 doesn’t love extra length — it creases early and the heel can slip.

Leather AJ1s also need a genuine break-in. The first three or four wears are stiff, particularly across the collar and the toe box flex point. Push through it; the leather softens properly by about week two.

For Indian conditions: the black leather hides Bombay monsoon damage better than most colourways, but the white midsole does not. A quick pre-treatment with a leather protectant before first wear pays for itself.

The Verdict

The Air Jordan 1 Royal 2026 is a good shoe arriving at a complicated moment.

Judged purely as footwear, it’s near-flawless: the cleanest of the original colourways, in full leather, on the cut most people actually want to wear. If you’ve spent nine years waiting for a Royal you don’t have to fight suede over, this is it.

Judged as a release, it’s a reminder that Jordan Brand’s biggest problem isn’t design — it’s discipline. A colourway this good deserved either the ’85 treatment or genuine scarcity. It’s getting neither, in the last stretch before the brand admits it printed too many AJ1s.

Buy it because it’s beautiful. Wear it. Don’t sit on it waiting for a number.

Key Takeaways

  • Air Jordan 1 Royal 2026 drops October 10 for $185, style code IQ5495-005
  • Full leather build in the standard Retro High OG cut — not the ’85
  • First leather Royal High since 2017; the 2023 suede “Reimagined” doesn’t count
  • Jordan Brand is reportedly cutting AJ1 High output from Spring 2027, which makes this a bookend release
  • Resale upside looks modest — the 2017 pair holds ~$235 on StockX, the 2023 pair never left retail
  • India buyers should watch Nike India and boutique stockists rather than SNKRS; expect roughly ₹17,000 domestically or ₹25,000+ imported
