Hailey Bieber Has Worn Both Ends of the Sneaker Argument

Three days ago we published a piece arguing that sneakers are shrinking.

Then Hailey Bieber went out to dinner.

On 22 August, Marie Claire reported that Bieber had been photographed in a pair of seriously chunky black sneakers — puffy, cloud-like, with a wavy oversized sole that looks like it was inflated rather than moulded. She wore them with Other Normal Signature Pants, a low-rise straight-leg style retailing at $99, a slightly cropped white T-shirt and an oversized black zip hoodie.

Wired headphones from Skylrk, her husband’s label. A black leather The Row Large To Go tote to carry the whole thing.

Four months earlier, the same person was wearing ballet sneakers.

This is not a contradiction to be resolved. It is the actual state of sneakers in 2026, and it is more useful than either trend on its own.

What Hailey Bieber Wore

The outfit, as reported:

Item Detail
Sneakers Chunky black, wavy oversized sole — brand not identified
Trousers Other Normal Signature Pants, low-rise straight leg, $99
Top Cropped plain white T-shirt
Outerwear Oversized black zip hoodie
Headphones Skylrk wired, Y2K throwback
Bag The Row Large To Go Tote, black leather

Note the shoe is unidentified. Again.

That is now two major celebrity sneaker stories inside a month where nobody could name the shoe — Nicole Kidman’s white airport ballet sneakers defeated Marie Claire’s own reporters in January, and this pair has done the same.

Worth sitting with. When the silhouette travels further than the brand, the trend is no longer about a product. It is about a proportion.

K&B Take: The interesting thing about this outfit is not the shoe. It is that the person wearing it has now publicly endorsed two mutually exclusive sneaker positions within one calendar year and taken zero damage for it.

The Problem With the Chunky Sneaker Verdict

Marie Claire framed the sighting as a clear sign the chunky sneaker trend is here to stay.

Fair enough. But five months earlier, Grazia ran a piece on Bieber’s narrow-profile Miu Miu trainers arguing that the dad sneaker had not imploded so much as quietly faded, replaced by slim toe boxes, soft suede and soles that hug the ground.

Same subject. Same year. Opposite conclusions. Both correct.

This is not a criticism of either publication. It is what happens when an industry that needs a single headline trend covers a market that no longer has one.

The honest read is that both silhouettes are now permanently available, and celebrities are treating them as a wardrobe rather than a position.

Her 2026 Footwear Timeline, In Order

Assembled from reporting across the year, Bieber’s sneaker rotation looks like this.

When What Direction
January Maison Margiela x Salomon XT-4 Maximal, technical
March Miu Miu narrow-profile trainers, gum sole Slim
Late March Fila Echappe hiking sneakers Maximal, gorpcore
April White ballet sneakers Extremely slim
June Nike x Comme des Garçons Air Pegasus 2005 Chunky
Summer Skylrk slim sneakers, 3D-printed sidewalls Slim
August ASICS GEL-Kayano, neon green Technical runner
22 August Unidentified puffy black chunky pair Maximal

Read down that column. There is no arc. There is no progression from one silhouette to another.

There is a person picking a shoe based on what she is doing that day.

Notably, she has largely skipped the consensus picks entirely — the Sambas, the Speedcats, the shoes everyone agrees on — in favour of limited runs and collabs. Her Fila Echappes reportedly sold out in ten minutes.

What the Timeline Actually Proves

Three things follow from it, and none of them are what a trend headline would tell you.

Silhouette has become situational. Ballet sneakers for an airport. Salomons for weather. Chunky Nikes for a dinner where the outfit is otherwise plain. The shoe is chosen against the occasion, not against the calendar.

Nobody is being punished for inconsistency. In a stricter era, wearing a dad shoe after publicly adopting slim trainers would have read as being behind. It now reads as having options.

The unidentified shoe is the tell. Twice this month, the specific product could not be pinned down and the story ran anyway. Coverage has shifted from “buy this” to “look at this shape,” which is a meaningful change in how sneaker trends propagate.

Our own fall 2026 sneaker trends report reached a version of this from the other direction: basketball silhouettes returning, dad shoes finished as a default. The correction we would now make is that “finished as a default” is not the same as finished.

The Middle Is What Died

Here is the part worth actually taking away.

For most of the last decade, the safe sneaker was a medium one. Moderate sole, moderate profile, moderate everything. A shoe that made no argument.

That shoe is now the least interesting object in the room.

What survives at either extreme has a reason to exist. A ballet sneaker is doing something specific — vanishing under a trouser, elongating a line. A puffy wavy-soled chunky sneaker is doing something equally specific — announcing itself, anchoring an otherwise plain outfit, adding visual weight where the clothes have none.

Look at Bieber’s dinner outfit again. White tee, black hoodie, plain trackpants. Almost nothing happening above the ankle. The shoe is the entire composition.

Swap in a moderate sneaker and the outfit stops working. Not because it looks bad. Because it stops saying anything.

Fashion houses figured this out first. The Miu Miu bubble sneaker and Balenciaga’s continuing appetite for exaggerated volume sit at one pole; the ballet hybrids sit at the other. Both sell. The shoe in between does not generate coverage.

How to Wear Chunky Sneakers This Fall

Bieber’s outfit is a genuinely good template, and it is cheap to copy in spirit if not in bag.

Keep everything above the ankle quiet. Plain tee, plain hoodie, plain trousers. The volume is the point; competing with it flattens the effect.

Go low-rise or straight-leg, not wide. This is where chunky and slim diverge sharply. A ballet sneaker wants a wide trouser falling over it. A chunky sneaker wants the leg to stop and let the shoe be seen. Bieber’s pants are low-rise straight-leg for exactly this reason.

Black on black is the easy version. A chunky sneaker in black reads as sportif rather than costume. White and colourblocked pairs demand more from the rest of the outfit.

One heavy accessory, maximum. She carried a structured tote. A structured tote plus a puffer plus cargo trousers plus a chunky shoe is not a look, it is a load-bearing wall.

Socks matter more than you think. Crew socks with visible ribbing suit chunky soles; no-show socks make the shoe look like it is eating your ankle.

Chunky vs Slim: Which One Is for You

Chunky Sneaker Slim / Ballet Sneaker
Best trouser Straight, low-rise, cropped Wide leg, full length
Effect on silhouette Anchors, adds weight Elongates, disappears
Works with plain outfits Excellent Poorly — needs the outfit to carry
Works with busy outfits Poorly Excellent
Travel packability Low High
Underfoot comfort Usually higher Varies dramatically
Monsoon survivability Depends on upper Generally worse

Neither wins. They solve opposite problems.

If your wardrobe is mostly plain — tees, hoodies, black trousers — the chunky shoe is doing useful work. If your wardrobe already has pattern, drape or volume, a slim sneaker will serve you better.

Buying Chunky Sneakers in India

The trend is easier to buy into here than most, because chunky runners are one of the few categories Indian retail actually stocks in depth.

Where to look: VegNonVeg, Superkicks and Mainstreet Marketplace carry the mainstream chunky silhouettes — New Balance, ASICS, Nike Air Max — with reasonable size runs. Brand-owned stores and Ajio Luxe cover the rest.

Rough price bands. Mainstream chunky runners sit in the ₹9,000–18,000 range depending on brand and model. Designer and collaboration pairs run considerably higher. Treat these as ballparks and check current listings — sneaker pricing in India moves with duties, exchange rates and sale cycles, and any figure quoted in an article ages badly.

On the luxury end, the import duty stack is brutal. As we documented in our Hermès sneaker guide, luxury footwear entering India carries roughly 42% in duties before a reseller takes a rupee. A Balenciaga 3XL bought through an Indian reseller can land at a substantial premium over boutique retail.

Counterfeit warning. Chunky sneakers are among the most heavily faked silhouettes in the Indian grey market, precisely because the sole unit is the recognisable part and a moulded sole is easy to approximate at a glance. Buy from authorised stockists. If a current-season Air Max or 1906R is listed well below the going rate, assume the obvious.

Monsoon note. Mesh uppers and foam midsoles hold water and hold smell. If you are wearing these through a wet season, our sneaker care archive covers protection and drying properly — and drying a foam midsole on a radiator is how you delaminate it.

For the wider domestic picture, our report on why India’s biggest sneaker brand sells shoes for ₹683 is a useful corrective to price expectations set by international coverage.

The Verdict

The useful thing about Hailey Bieber’s chunky sneakers is not that they signal a trend. It is that they undermine the idea that there is one.

In a single year she has worn Salomons, Miu Miu slims, Filas, ballet sneakers, Comme des Garçons Nikes, her husband’s brand and now an unidentifiable puffy black pair. Nobody has accused her of being confused, because she is not. She is dressing for occasions rather than for a calendar.

That is the permission worth taking. You do not need to pick a side in the chunky-versus-slim argument, because the people setting the trend have quietly stopped picking one themselves.

Own one of each. Wear the small one when the clothes are doing the work, and the big one when they are not.

The only genuinely unfashionable sneaker left is the one that makes no argument at all.

Key Takeaways

  • Hailey Bieber was photographed on 22 August 2026 in chunky black sneakers with a wavy oversized sole; the brand has not been identified.
  • She styled them with $99 Other Normal low-rise trackpants, a cropped white tee, an oversized black hoodie and a black The Row tote.
  • She wore ballet sneakers in April and Miu Miu slim trainers in March, making 2026 a year in which she has worn both extremes.
  • Coverage has split accordingly, with different outlets declaring the dad shoe dead and the chunky sneaker permanent within five months of each other.
  • The silhouette that has actually declined is the moderate, mid-volume sneaker.
  • Chunky pairs suit plain outfits and straight-leg trousers; slim pairs suit busy outfits and wide legs.
  • In India, expect roughly ₹9,000–18,000 for mainstream chunky runners; verify current pricing and buy from authorised stockists.
